Launched in 2008, and with a very strong community, Runkeeper is one app that everyone must try. It’s functionality and ease of use is second to none. It keeps track of your runs with your phone’s built in GPS whilst also tracking your distance, performance, pace and time. Results are stored in your local profile, which you can then view your progression over any time period you choose. Goal setting is also another great feature, allowing you to compete against yourself, smashing your own records again and again. Sharing your progress on social media is also one of the selling points of this app, able to directly link to your facebook, twitter and google+ making it easy to share (read. Brag) to your friends and colleagues. Runkeep also syncs with 12 other fitness apps as well as services like Spotify.
Not just for runners, this application will also track your cycling progress and weirdly enough, your kayaking (although I’m not sure you should be taking your very expensive device out onto the water with you?). With Endomondo you can set goals and tasks, see your progress live, switch on an encouragement feature where it will shout “You can do it!” for that extra motivation (this is surprisingly handy). Once again, social sharing is a major component of this app, and it does so with ease. The app will also allow you to sync your information to the endomondo website, for easy viewing and postmortem analysis.
